Junior Rookie Canada Day Tournament
2009-07-02
One of the great baseball traditions in Newmarket is the annual Canada Day Junior Rookie tournament hosted at Fairy Lake alongside the numerous other Kanata Festival activities. Pictures and more highlights, click full story...
Despite the gloomy forecast, Mother Nature pitched a gem on July 1 as all five games scheduled were played with hardly a sprinkle of rain. In fact, throughout the day there were several bursts of warm sunshine. This year’s tournament featured over 50 players representing all 12 Junior Rookie teams who displayed their baseball skills and passion for the game in front of big Canada Day crowds at the showcase diamond at Fairy Lake.
Among the tournament highlights were the handful of over-the-fence home runs bashed by some of Junior Rookie’s budding stars.
Newmarket Baseball also hosted a pitching booth where over 340 young players tested the speed of their pitch and won great prizes, all donated by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #426.
It was indeed a Happy Canada Day: a bunch of 6- and 7-year-olds having a blast playing baseball in front of big crowds, no rain during the tournament, a great pitching booth with fabulous prizes and the Jays beat the Rays 5-0! Special thanks to the coaches, players, and sponsors who carried on this great Canada Day tradition in Newmarket. Thanks to the North Newmarket Lions for donating lunch for all the players and coaches, to Sew Perfect for donating all the Canada Day baseball caps for the participants, and CeDe Candy for all the rockets!
