NEWMARKET - The SaleEvent.ca '08 Minor Rookie Hawks head into the 2nd half of the 2016 season this weekend with a tournament in London. The Hawks play teams from Oshawa and Woodslee on Saturday prior to Sunday's semi-finals.
So far this season, the Hawks have played in 2 "AAA" tournaments, reaching the Finals in the MSBA tournament, and finishing 0-2-1 in the Mississauga North tournament. The Hawks lost to MSBA 11-5, tied Milton 19-19, and lost to the Mississauga Major 13-11. All 3 games were well-played. Overall, the Hawks tournament record is 4-4-1.
"Our team has played really well at both tournaments we've entered so far this season," said Coach Tim. "Typically, Newmarket doesn't enter "AAA" tournaments, so getting some games in against the top teams in Ontario has really shown us where we're at as a group. Our final 2 tournaments, as well as the YSBA and OBA playoffs will strictly be against "AA" teams and below."
In regular season play, the Hawks are stuck in a 3-game losing streak, but still have an overall record of 7 wins against 3 losses. The Hawks will look to break the streak on Monday night with a home game against Bolton.
"We've committed to doing full defensive rotation during the regular season, regardless of whether that affects our win-loss record. We're rolling 2 sets of 6 players to cover the key infield positions, and we switch back and forth every inning. The regular season is essentially a set of exhibition games, and we're using them to help develop skills. Obviously, we still try to win, but it's not the main focus."
The Hawks play Oshawa Saturday at 8:00 am, and Woodslee at 2 pm, before being ranked and placed in either the A, B, C or D semi-finals on Sunday. Good seats are still available.
