'08 Minor Rookie Hawks YSBA Champions!

2016-08-22 - Minor Rookie Rep

Exhausted happy little and big boys

The '08 Hawks went 5 and 0 to win the YSBA Championship.

MARKHAM - The SaleEvent.ca '08 Minor Rookie Hawks became YSBA Champions on the weekend, going 5 and 0 to earn the team's first title.  The Hawks will try for the OBA crown in Brantford on Labour Day Weekend.

"That was our best baseball of the season.  You can really see how much the kids have developed since last September's tryouts," said Coach Tim afterwards.  "You can also see a big change in the coaching staff since the beginning of the season.  We've all come a long way."

The Hawks employed a 6-inning rotation, giving all the kids at least 2 turns in the infield and 1 turn on the bench.  Friday's game against Vaughan saw the Hawks play fantastic defence, leading 14-0 before ending the game at 14-3.  Saturday morning's showdown against Barrie was a bit sloppy, but the Hawks prevailed 19-11.  Stouffville was next, and the Hawks played solid D while posting a 9-3 win.  The 3rd game on Saturday was against Markham.

"The heat started to get to the boys.  Markham had a bye in the morning and was a lot fresher than we were.  We were lucky to storm out to a big lead, but we gave it all back and were tied at 9 going into our last at-bat.  Dayne's walk-off single was a big relief," said Coach Tim.

The final score was 10-9 for the Hawks and the team went to bed as the King of the Hill.  Stouffville would have to beat them twice on Sunday.  Sunday morning came and the Stouffville Yankees had obviously game-planned for the Hawks' aggressive baserunning.  Coach Tim got a few baserunners thrown out trying to draw throws to the plate in the early innings, but he made an adjustment as the game went on.  In the end, the Hawks shut down the Yankees in the bottom of the 7th, hanging on for another 10-9 victory.

"That was a fantastic game.  All their coaches seem to be good guys.  Great sportsmanship throughout the whole game.  It's nice to be able to play a competitive style of baseball without the chippiness that sometimes develops...the umps were pretty good as well, which definitely helps," said Coach Tim.  "We're all stuck with each other for a few years, so we might as well get along and enjoy our time on the diamond together."

The Hawks practice Monday, Wednesday and Saturday prior to their team event (it's a surprise!), then they're off to Stouffville on Sunday for exhibition games against the Yankees and the Barrie Red Sox.  Another 2 practices, and then it's the OBAs in Brantford on Labour Day Weekend.  Good seats are still available. :)
