The 2015 Newmarket Peewee AAA Hawks are now TEAM ONTARIO!  The Hawks, sponsored by the North Newmarket Lions, just won the Baseball Ontario Eliminations Tournament in Windsor on the August long weekend and will be representing Ontario at the Baseball Canada 13U National Championships in Repentigny, Quebec from Aug. 20-24.  (Details of the Nationals are athttp://old.baseball.ca/13u/index_eng.cfm?content=home.)

Said NBA VP-Rep, Ted Williams: “Congratulation to the team –  you have made Newmarket proud by winning an Elimination tournament for the first time in 15 years.”  YSBA President Jeff Albaum chimed in, “Congratulations on a great accomplishment!”

What a weekend of baseball for the Hawks!  It was a 7-game double-elimination marathon for them over four days that included:

  • Opening round nailbiter 8-6 win against North York, one of the pre-tournament favourites
  • Second round 6-4 win against a scrappy Richmond Hill team who always play Newmarket tough
  • Third round 18-0 win against Oakville where the Hawks bats caught fire with a 9-run first inning
  • Fourth round 15-5 win against undefeated Etobicoke
  • Fifth round 12-2 loss against YSBA rival Markham (who themselves just lost 11-1 to Etobicoke)
  • Sixth round/semi-final 8-0 win against a tough London team (was only 2-0 heading into the 5th inning)
  • Seventh round/championship come-from-behind, bottom of the 7th walk-off 11-10 win against Markham

In the final game, Markham scored 6 runs in the top of the 1st.  The Hawks refused to quit and scored 2 in the bottom of the 1st and then 4 more in the bottom of the 3rd to tie the game.  Markham had a 7-6 lead heading into the bottom of the 6th when the Hawks scored 3 more to take a 9-7 lead.  Markham fought back and scored 3 of their own in the top of the 7th, but the Hawks again did not give up and scored 2 in the bottom of the 7th for the walk-off win!

At start of play on Monday, four of the 20 teams remained, all with one loss each: Markham, Etobicoke, London, and Newmarket.  By the end of the tournament, the Hawks had defeated each of the final four teams!  Windsor-Essex TV did a live broadcast of the championship game that included colour commentary.  The video is now posted on their youtube channel:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZJwqC_l__o.

The championship team includes players Grant B, Mitchell B, Bradley E, Jaden H, Thomas J, Matthew K, Reid L, Brycen P, William P, RJ T, Nicolas V,  Brady W, and Lucas W., and coaches Doug Lunney (head coach), Rich Lunney, Rob Hums, and Scott Pogue (assistants).  The team is very excited to represent Newmarket, the NBA, the YSBA, and Baseball Ontario at the Nationals!

“I’m so very proud of our boys,” said Coach Doug after the game.  Added Assistant Coach Rich: “Everyone – players, coaches, parents, family – is a part of this amazing Newmarket Peewee Hawks team. Everyone shares in this once in a lifetime experience and victory.”
