FAQ for Rep/Select/MEL tryouts for the 2016 Season

1.  What is the difference between Select, Rep and Elite?

Select, Rep and Elite are all competitive leagues at different levels.

Select is not as competitive as Rep, is designed as stepping stone from House League into a more competitive baseball style.  Players on the Select team play on a House League team as well.  You should expect your child to play one or two nights in House League,  nearly play every weekend in Select as well as 1-5 tournaments a year depending on the team.   There will also be practices for both teams scheduled each week.

Rep is a more competitive league.  These players do not play in House League.  You should expect your child to have two practices each week and one or two games which usually fall during the week but may be on weekend as well as  1-5 tournaments a year which may include tournaments into the USA depending on the team.

Elite is only offered at the Midget Level.  These players do not play in House League or Rep.  This league is exactly what the name represents - an Elite League.  This is a highly competitive league that is run more like a private league but without the high cost of a private league.

2.  Where and when are the tryouts?

The tryout schedule can be found HERE.  Watch the website for updates if there are any last minute changes or rain outs.

3.  Do I have to pre-register for tryouts?

No, there is no pre-registration required.  There will be a sign up sheet required to fill out at the first tryout you attend.

4.  What are the fees to tryout?

There is a one time fee of $20 payable to "Newmarket Baseball Association".  (Cheques are preferred over cash)

5.  How many of the tryout dates and times must my child attend?

The Newmarket Baseball Association By-Laws state that each child must attend a minimum of two of the tryouts however we encourage you to attend all the dates if possible.  If you are unable to make it to all the tryout dates, discuss this individually with the coach at the first tryout you attend.  Each coach has a format that he follows for his tryouts and may make cuts after each date or may wait until all tryouts are complete before making cuts.

6.  Will there be two rep teams in each division?

Second rep teams for each division will be considered pending the number of players attending the tryouts.  If there are enough players to make a second team and a coach available, a second team will be considered at each level.
*There are currently NO second teams for Junior and Senior rep teams.

7.  Which divisions are offering a select team?

Select teams are decided based on the number of participants that attend the rep tryouts.  If there are many players that come out a Select team will be chosen.  In 2015 we offered Select teams as Rookie and Mosquito.

8.  Why are there no tryouts for the Select teams?

Tryouts for Select will be added to the schedule if necessary.  Once we determine of the number of interested players in each division, we will then assign a coach and schedule tryout dates.

9.  How many games, practices, tournaments will my child have if he makes the team?

These types of questions are division and age specific.  Each coach decides how many practices per week and how many tournaments he wants to enter his team in for the year.  You will be able to ask the coach these types of questions at the tryouts.

10.  What are the fees required if my child makes the team?

Each player must pay their NBA membership fee for their division (please see the bylaws for exact amount, ranging from $170 to $220, an additional cost for playing Rep through YSBA (approx $275)  plus the Team fee as set by the coach (this includes indoor workout fees, tournament fees, equipment fees etc.) On average you should expect to pay between $1000 and $1500 for the year (plus travel expenses to away tournaments).  This amount may be higher or lower depending on how many tournaments your team attends, if the team purchases matching bags and helmets etc, and if the team has indoor workouts at a school gym or a facility such as Player's Edge.
