What makes a good story is not just a great ending, but also a great beginning with many twists and turns throughout. Our Newmarket Peewee A YSBA provincial qualifiers victory story ticks all the boxes off. Anyone who has been fortunate to be around this amazing group of boys, parents and coaches can attest to that. With a 16-2 regular season record they entered the YSBA weekend with not just the best record in the Peewee A YSBA division but also either winning or a competitive showing in all 4
tournaments they played in. The regular season record is a testament not just to the skill of the boys but their work ethic, and more importantly their teamwork. Many of those wins were come from behind wins, proving all year long that if you never give up anything is possible. The Hawks brought their never surrender attitude to the YSBA’s as they moved through the tournament playing the toughest
teams, no bracket byes, few rest breaks, and were the only team whom had to play 6 games.

The Hawks took care of unfinished business from last year and beat Barrie in their opening game and then again later in the semis on Sunday – knocking them out of the YSBA’s. A close loss to Markham on Saturday morning gave the team a 1-1 record and put them in a must win situation for the remainder of the weekend. Saturday afternoon’s match against Richmond Hill was again close, but the Hawks
prevailed and moved to 2-1 going into the evening game.

The next order of business was the Orillia Royals and it was a tall order. While Newmarket had beaten Orillia in both regular season games this year, nothing could be taken for granted. Orillia had more pitchers at their disposal due to a Friday night and Saturday games against lesser opponents while Newmarket had already used up 3 starting pitchers through the first 3 games. Sometimes miracles
happen and after a hot, humid sunny long day of baseball the skies opened to pour rain just before the 8 pm game, and the whole tournament was postponed until early Sunday morning. The Hawks now would have their hard throwing starting pitcher Justin back in action for Sunday. After beating Orillia early Sunday morning in a close match, the Hawks then knocked out Barrie in the second game of the day, and the stage was set for the YSBA’s final at 2:30 pm. A well-rested Orillia was coming off a bracket bye to get to the finals while Newmarket came limping in from their 5th game battle with Barrie.

At the start of the championship game the Hawks second baseman Tyrus was taped up and playing with a jammed thumb. Early into the game after his first hit, he was forced to leave due to injury. Following that catcher Aidan was experiencing arm soreness and needed to be subbed out of the line-up as well. Orillia came on strong and after only 3 innings the Hawks were already down 13-1. The well rested Orillia team was pounding out hit after hit, and run after run, as pitcher Nolan did his best to keep throwing strikes despite the offensive onslaught. The day was getting hotter and the boys were getting tired. Things were not looking good for the Hawks as both centerfielder Sebastian experienced a heat stroke induced migraine and third baseman Michael had a hard-thrown ball off his ankle while sliding back to base on an attempted pick off. Both boys dug deeper to stay in the game. The entire Hawks team dug deeper as well because if one more player was lost to injury the Hawks would be forced to forfeit. Pitcher Nathan went in relief to pitch shut down innings from the 3rd forwards with a strong defence behind him. The Hawks began chipping away at the lead. Kayden, Jacob, Patrick, Carter, Justin, Sebastian, Joey, Michael, and Nathan got hits, drew walks, and stole bases to begin the comeback.

13-1 became 13-5 in the 4th. Next inning 13-5 became 13-8 which then became 13-11 by the end of the
6th. It was the bottom of the 7th inning with the Hawks batting and down by 2. The team drew upon
their season long mantra – they are never out of a game. Anything is possible. The Hawks tied the

game 13-13 in the bottom of the 7th inning and took the game into extra innings. With two out in the
top of the eighth inning Orillia hit a home run with one runner on to take a 15-13 lead. Celebrations
were loud on the Orillia bench and with their fans. The Hawks came up in the bottom of the 8th inning
down by 2. The cheering got louder with the Hawks fans and players on the bench returning their own
loud cheers to help their team on. Some fantastic hitting and solid base running ensued and the game
was suddenly tied at 15. With one out and a runner at 3rd, Carter hit a sacrifice fly to left field bringing
in Jacob for the winning run. After a three-hour marathon match between two strong teams, the Hawks
stood victorious defeating Orillia 16-15.
For those who were present Sunday afternoon, this was one of the most incredibly exciting moments
they had ever experienced in any level of sports. This unbelievable comeback was one that was
accomplished by hard work and more importantly teamwork which proved that a great team is not just
created by an accumulation of each individual’s skills, it is created by teamwork, character,
perseverance, and determination. In short it is created by how well those individuals become one.

Congratulations and good luck in the OBA Provincial Championships to the Newmarket Pee Wee A
Hawks players, coaches, and families!
